When I was a child, I used to suck the nectar from azalea flowers. I was drawn to their sweet scent and subtle taste. That memory made me want to paint a “carpet of azaleas” covering the ground. It came from a simple desire to be surrounded by that fragrance. It’s close to the feeling of wanting to take something I love into my body.

A desire to eat it, to suck it in. This work was inspired by that kind of simple, instinctive craving.
